Professor Ama Ata Aidoo, A Well-Known Ghanaian Author, Dies At The Age Of 81
One of Africa’s most-celebrated authors and playwrights, Ghanaian Ama Ata Aidoo, has died aged 81.
A renowned feminist, she depicted and celebrated the condition of African women in works such as The Dilemma of a Ghost, Our Sister Killjoy and Changes.
She opposed what she described as a “Western perception that the African female is a downtrodden wretch”.
She also served as education minister in the early 1980s but resigned when she could not make education free.
In a statement, her family said “our beloved relative and writer” passed away after a short illness, requesting privacy to allow them to grieve.
A university professor, Ata Aidoo won many literary awards for her novels, plays and poems, including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Changes, a love story about a statistician who divorces her first husband and enters into a polygamous marriage.
Her work, including plays like Anowa, have been read in schools across West Africa, along with works of other greats like Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe.
When asked by BBC HARDTalk’s Zeinab Badawi in 2014 if she regarded herself as a writer with a mission, she replied: “In retrospect, I suppose I could describe myself as a writer with a mission. But I never was aware that I had a mission when I started to write.
“People sometimes question me, for instance, why are your women so strong? And I say, that is the only woman I know.”
She was a major influence on the younger generation of writers, including Nigeria’s awarding-winning Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
“When I first discovered Ama Ata Aidoo’s work – a slim book on a dusty shelf in our neighbour’s study in Nsukka [in south-eastern Nigeria] – I was stunned by the believability of her characters, the sureness of her touch and what I like to call, in a rather clunky phrase, the validating presence of complex femaleness.
“Because I had not often seen this complex femaleness in other African books I had read and loved, mine was a wondrous discovery: of Anowa, tragic and humane and many dimensional, in Aidoo’s play set in the 1800s in Fantiland; of Sissie, the self-assured, perceptive main character of the ambitious novel Our Sister Killjoy, who wryly recounts her experiences in Germany and England in the 1960s; or of the varied female characters in No Sweetness Here, my favourite of Aidoo’s books.”
Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy included her powerful criticism of colonialism and ongoing exploitation of Africa’s resources in his song Monsters You Made in 2020:
“Since we met you people 500 years ago. Look at us, we’ve given everything. You are still taking. In exchange for that, we have got nothing. Nothing. And you know it. But don’t you think that this is over now? Over where? Is it over?”
Ama Ata Aidoo was born in a small village in Ghana’s central Fanti-speaking region in 1942.
Her father had opened the first school in the village and was a strong influence on her.
At the age of 15 she decided that she wanted to be a writer and within just four years, had achieved that ambition after she was encouraged to enter a competition.
“I won a short story competition but learned about it only when I opened the newspaper that had organised it, and saw the story had been published on its centre pages and realised the name of the author of that story in print was mine,” Ata Aidoo once said as she looked back at her career.
“I believe these moments were crucial for me because … I had articulated a dream… it was a major affirmation for me as a writer, to see my name in print.”
She went on to study literature at the University of Ghana and became a lecturer, publishing her first play in 1964.
After her 18 month-foray into politics she went into self-imposed exile in Zimbabwe for a time and became a full-time writer.
The SRC President Of UMaT, His Excellency Isaac Aryeetey Fulfill His Promise Again
On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Simmons, together with other distinguished principal members and SRC executives of the University of Mines and Technology, performed the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the 10NR outdoor reading and relaxation shed at the ED – Block on the Tarkwa campus of the university.
The outdoor reading and relaxation shed, which is sorely funded by the SRC, is a carefully tailored project by the Aryeetey-Kwaning led administration to serve as a relaxation area for the teeming number of non-residential students. With about 80% of the total student population being non-residents, this project will cushion the pressure on the current structures to reduce the struggle for snug sheds in between lecture hours.
In his remarks, the SRC President, His Excellency Isaac Aryeetey, thanked the Executive Council, the Students Parliament, the Judiciary Committee, and management for expediting the project. He also thanked the entire student populace for the trust reposed in him and admonished students to continue to support the SRC as the interests of students have been a paramount responsibility.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Registrar, Mr. Matthew Okrah, among others, congratulated the President His Excellency Isaac Aryeetey and his able SRC executives on such a laudable project and encouraged the SRC to work even harder to ensure the welfare of students remains a top priority.
Special thanks to the Vice Dean of Research, Innovation, and Consultancy, Dr. Frank Boateng, and the Hall Warden of KT Hall, Dr. Cecilia Addae.
The brief and impressive ceremony ended with a vote of thanks from the SRC Attorney General, Miss Edwish Frimpong.
Apostle Francis Amoako Attah Prophecies About Kumawu By-Election
The SEER, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah-Founder and Leader of Parliament Chapel International has again been hailed by many people who have been following developments as regards the happenings at Kumawu these few days.
The reason for that, this Journalist was amazed to know, and could not hide it from the World is an in-depth prophecy Apostle Francis Amoako released about Kumasi and Kumasi to be precise.
This happened two years ago, on 27th October 2021, when the SEER Apostle Francis Amoako Attah was leading the 2nd ‘Mpaebo Kese’ activities in Church.
‘Mpaebo Kesie’ is a routine power-packed prayer session put together by Parliament Chapel International (PCI) which is held at the Church’s auditorium, where the power and the authority of God is revoked.
During the second session of this all-inspiring prayer session, the SEER, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah told his congregation to “Write this (prophecy) down.”
This didn’t make sense to anybody until last night when all attention of the media, chiefs, and all political parties was drawn to Kumawu to jostle and campaign for vote.
In that Prophesy, Apostle Francis Amoako said in Twi and was translated into English, “We knew that Okomfo Anokye planted a tree, a very big ancient tree, which is dying off and an Angel of the Lord stretches His hands and asked me to see what is happening to the tree. In the realms of the Spirits, I saw a Kumawu Tree, and it is getting sprouted, the Kumawu tree has started growing and now the tree which had died a long time ago; the tree has suddenly grown in Kumawu.”
According to him, the Kumawu tree has branches and produced seven different types of fruits and the whole village and the Ashanti Kingdom turn their attention onto the village (Kumawu).
He said; “I saw a party flag, pick-ups, cars, and what is more surprising is that I saw Kings, chiefs, and big politicians; all coming to Kumawu to eat from that tree.”
The SEER also indicated that the since the Tree has produced seven different fruits, he saw many people in the spirit realm, sneaking into the community to ‘steal’ some of the fruits.
“That Kumawu Tree has sprouted and grown,” he said.
“Write this prophecy down. The Kumawu tree has bear fruits. Kings, and politicians will go there in night to get some of the fruits to eat. People are just sneaking into the community in darkness.”
Apostle Francis Amoako Attah stated strongly that “Hope” is being restored in Kumawu, stressing that “In 2024, the Ashanti Region will become the eye for the winner. And that Ashanti region will become one of the most dangerous places and any party that would joke with that Region would do so at its own risk.
He also mentioned that the Ashanti region will become the basket of decisions in 2024, as “Many stars are coming from Ashanti region.”
This prophesy didn’t make any sense until last night when activities at Kumawu become the top of issues on our airwaves.
Chiefs, and several top politicians from all political parties have traveled to Kumawu to ensure that they, and their party succeed in getting some of the fruits from the Kumawu Tree.

Former GIMPA SRC President Threatens To Sue Alma Mater
The GIMPA SRC President for the 2018/19 academic year, Joseph Osei Mensah, and his executive were accused of embezzling GH70,000 prior to the end of their tenure in office by the then Dean of Students, Prof. Anthony Mawuli Sallar.
As a result, the school withheld his diploma while an investigation was conducted.
The SRC Vice President, Kwadwo Yeboah Darkwah; the SRC Treasurer, Felix Kwasi Donkor; the SRC PRO, Jeffred Okoe Aryeetey; the Finance Committee Chairman, Emmanuel Ashaley Djanie; and the Chairman of the Social Planning Committee, Bright Ayi Junior were also affected.
When the new SRC administration took over, they conducted an independent investigation into the situation.
The outcome established that Mr Osei Mensah and his colleagues were not guilty, stating that the previous administration handed over an audited account in a proper and transparent manner.
As a result, on February 4, 2020, the students’ leadership issued a press statement to clear the former SRC president of the allegations, stating that the SRC’s finances were in order and that there was no embezzlement as reported by the then Dean of Students.
Management, however, was dissatisfied and formed a committee led by Professor Philip Osei Duku, the then Deputy Rector, with other members to investigate the matter further.
Other members included GIMPA’s then-secretary, Julius Atukpui (retired); Dr Lord Yevugah Mawuko, Head of the Department for Public Schools; James Abrah, Director of Finance, and Charity Hayford, who served as Committee Secretary.
The Committee submitted its report in August 2020, after three months of investigation.
He does, however, want the Committee’s recommendations to be fully implemented, with a focus on a release that clears him and his colleagues.
“It is important to note that the recommendations as captured in the Committee’s report, was further tabled at the Central Administration Committee of the Institute, chaired by then Rector, Prof. Phillip Bondzi-Simpson and was further affirmed, which gave the Secretary of the Institute the green light to proceed with the full implementation of the Committee’s recommendations.
Unfortunately, the GIMPA Management has failed to faithfully carry out the full implementation of the recommendations for nearly three years,” he lamented.
The accused’s certificates, however, have been released by the school.

Soccer Legend Pelé Will Spend Christmas Hospitalized As Cancer Advances
Brazilian soccer icon Pelé’s cancer ailment has progressed further and he needs care for renal and cardiac failure, according to his medical team. His family indicated he will stay in a hospital in Sao Paulo for Christmas according to a CNN report.
Pelé, 82, has been undergoing medical treatment since a cancerous tumor was removed from his colon last year. This latest medical stay, according to doctors, will bring a “re-evaluation of the chemotherapy treatment over the colon cancer identified in September 2021,”
The three-time World Cup winner, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, has been under treatment for a respiratory infection in addition to his other health setbacks.
One of the soccer star’s daughters, Kely Nascimento-DeLuca explained that her father suffered a COVID-19 infection, despite being vaccinated “with all doses,” as a result of the chemotherapy that had made him more fragile.
Pelé posted on Instagram Sunday commemorating Argentina’s victory in the World Cup final. The photo depicted the team hoisting the trophy. Pele praised team captain Lionel Messi, rising sensation Kylian Mbappe of France, and surprise semifinalist Moroccan team for their play.
